THE HINDENBURG

(1) The Zeppelin Company made enormous airships. They were like big ships with dining rooms, lounges and cabins, but they crossed the Atlantic in tow days. They were fast; in 1929, an airship called the Graf Zeppelin went round the world in twenty-one days. (2) On 4th May, `937, an airship called the Hindenburg began its last flight. WHO WAS JULIUS CAESAR?

Born in 100 BC, a member of an important Roman family, Julius Caesar was one of the greatest men who ever live. The largest animal alive is the blue whale. Fully grown these great creatures reach a length of over 30 meters and weigh as much as twenty four larger elephants, are more than 1,500 men. The heart of a blue whale is more than a meter in diameter.

The blue whale is not a fish, even through it spends its entire life in the sea. Whales are mammals, just like us. A mother whale gives birth to a live baby whale, not an egg. She feeds her baby with her own milk. While fish are cold-blooded, whales are warm-blooded, and they have lungs and breather air, like us.

For all its size, a blue whale feeds mainly on tiny shrimps. It is harmless to man. Unfortunately for the blue whales, men are not harmless to them. So many blue whales have been hunted and killed that very few of these magnificent animals are now alive.

Lighting is a sudden, violent flash of electricity between a cloud and the ground, or from cloud to cloud.

A lighting flash, or bolt, can be several miles long. It is so hot, with an average temperature of 34,0000 centigrade, that the air around it suddenly expands with a loud blast. This is the thunder, we hear. 

Lighting occurs in hot, wet storms. Moist air is driven up to great height. It from a type of cloud called cumulo-nimbus. When the cloud rises high enough the moisture freezes and ice crystals and snowflakes are formed. These begin to fall, turning to rain on the way down. This rain meets more moist air rising, and it is the friction between them which produces static electricity. When a cloud is fully charged with this electricity, it discharges it as a lighting flash.
