THE LEGEND OF TANDUK ALAM

Central Sulawesi – Indonesia

Amongst the local inhabitants of Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, Tanduk Alam is known as a prominent Islamic scholar who was originally from Palembang, South Sumatra, but most of his time was spent in the Land of Banggai, Central Sulawesi.

There was a time the king of Banggai asked for help from him to release the royal Princess who was kidnapped by the Tobelo troops in the island of Sagu. Would he successfully release the Princess from the Tobelo people? Here is the story…!

Long time ago in Palembang, South Sumatra, a place where is assumed of being the central administrative government of Sriwijaya Empire, there was a prominent Islamic scholar named Hasan Tanduk Alam. He once sailed across the sea, leaving Palembang for the Land of Banggai in Central Sulawesi, in terms of establishing economic link and disseminating the Islamic teachings there. However, the voyage was stopped in the Land of Sea-Sea before arriving at Banggai.

In the early years of settling in Sea-Sea, Tanduk Alam earned his living from serving as a gold miner as well as a goldsmith. While grappling with gold mining and bullion matter, he spent most of the time to spread the Islamic teachings to the local inhabitants living in Sea-Sea. For that reason, he was famous as either a goldsmith or an Islamic ulema.

For such popularity, the name Tanduk Alam then was known by the royal family of Banggai Kingdom. Banggai Kingdom, at that time, was headed by a king named Adi Cokro. To run the monarch government, King Adi Cokro got assisted by four basalo (ministers).

One day, the royal family of Banggai Kingdom got panic following the missing of the royal Princess. At a moment’s notice, the king summoned all the royal troops to seek for the Princess. Unfortunately, all the efforts ended in failure. The only thing they knew that the Princess was kidnapped by the Tobelo troops settling in the island of Sagu. In addition, the Tobelo troops were the minions of King Ternate who was eager to occupy the Kingdom of Banggai.

Knowing the fact, King Adi Cokro convened the four basalo for a meeting.

“O… My basalo, sure you have known the current situation in our kingdom! Therefore I summoned you to gather in this room. I want you all to make an attack to Sagu Island to release my daughter. But you have to notice, do not hurt the commoners. Defeat the rebellions and take my daughter back!”

All the four basalo then moved to the island of Sagu. With some royal troops, the sailed across the sea leading to Sagu Island with hope to find the Princess and get her back. Unfortunately, their effort was a mere failure since the number of Tobelo royal troop was bigger than the Banggai’s. Luckily the four basalo were alive; hence they could get back to the kingdom to report the result.

“Pardon us, the Majesty! We have failed to bring the Princess back. The Tobelo royal troops were greater in quantities than ours, so we didn’t want to take the worse risk if we kept moving forward,” a basalo reported to the king.

The king woke up from the throne and walked back and forth. It appeared that the king was thinking the solution for such. Then all of sudden, a basalo interrupted, “How about discussing the problem with Tanduk Alam, the Majesty? I heard a lot about him. And most of our people know about his magical and talismanic power?”

“If so, get him to be here!” the king responded to the basalo.

 “Alright, the Majesty!”

Te four basalo then went to the Land of Sea-Sea. In this occasion, they wished they could meet Tanduk Alam for delivering the king’s order. They met at Tanduk ALam’s house. Some small talks happened as the four basalo sent the king’s order. Tanduk Alam and the four basalo then moved to the palace, and met the king.

“The Majesty, I’ve been here to meet your order,” Tanduk Alam said.

“Oo…Tanduk Alam, sure you have known about the recent situation in our kingdom. My daughter was seized by the Tobelo troops upon order from the King Ternate,”

“Yes, I have known about it, the Majesty. Are you sure that the Tobelo troops grab her to the island of Sagu?”

“Yes, she is now with the Tobelo in the island of Sagu. Now, I beg your help to release my daughter,”

“With all of my heart, the Majesty, I will do the things I can do to serve the kingdom. But I have a request, the Majesty,”

“What is it, Tanduk Alam? Tell me!” the king asked.

“Do not send a number of royal troops to accompany me in releasing the Princess. I just want to avoid the fall of victims for this mission,” Tanduk Alam’s remarks.

“Alright if that so, but let me order the four basalo to accompany you,”

In the following day, Tanduk Alam and the four basalo sailed across the sea, moving forwards to the island of Sagu. While sailing, they discussed the strategy to release the Princess.

“Just hold yourself still while I am releasing the Princess. Do not make any crowd when we reach the island,” Tanduk Alam said to the four basalo.

“But how will we enter the island? Almost all the areas have been under guarded by a number of Tobelo troops, indeed,” a basalo asked.

“So let me go there alone, and you just stay here!” Tanduk Alam replied.

“That’s so much dangerous for you!”

“Nope! With the help of Allah, I am sure I would be able to release the Princess,”

In the mid of a night, they reached the island. Tanduk Alam then moved closer to the island. He tiptoed towards the island then sit with the legs crossed, praying to God. Suddenly, Tanduk Alam was gone miraculously. He was invisible at the time; thus could enter the Tobelo troops barrack in safe.

The four basalo just waited and saw from the ship, keeping an eye just in case there would be a sudden attack from the Tobelo troops. Tanduk Alam alone had been in front of the prison where the Princess was. All the Tobelo troops were sleeping as well as the Princess. Gently he opened the door of a room where the Princess was. He moved to the Princess, and the Princess was awakened, shocked.

“Who are you?!” the Princess asked at a moment’s notice.

“I’m here to save you, just keep silent or they will be awakened!” Tanduk Alam said.

 “Is that true?”

“Yes, it is. King Adi Cokro is your father, isn’t he? He asked me to release you,”

“But, how do we escape away from this place?”

“Now, just follow my order. Sit down and close your eyes! We’re going to escape away in safe. I promise!” Tanduk Alam ordered the Princess and recited some prayers to make them invisible.

Suddenly, they had been in the ship. The four basalo were shocked to know Tanduk Alam had been in the ship, along with the Princess in safe.

“Come on! We have to sail back to the kingdom, now!” Tanduk Alam ordered the four basalo.

 “Alright! Let’s move!”

When the sun was going to rise, Tanduk Alam, the Princess, and the four basalo had arrived at the kingdom’s harbour. They were welcomed by the local inhabitants who missed their Princess who was known as wise, smiling, and very open to the commoners.

They went to the palace and were welcomed by the king.

“Thank you so much for helping me, Tanduk Alam. Is there any thing you want from me, Tanduk Alam? The king thanked Tanduk Alam.

“If you don’t mind, let me have a land here. I would like to use it as the Sago and Durian plantations. I wish that would be beneficial not only for me, but also for all the people here,” Tanduk Alam delivered his wish.

“If that so, I would order the royal troops to open a new land for you, tomorrow,” the king said.

A land nearby the royal palace of Banggai Kingdom was bestowed upon Tanduk Alam by King Adi Cokro. That was the return from the king to him upon the help he had made to the kingdom.

The land was then functioned as a sago and durian plantations by Tanduk Alam. Several years later, he had his first harvest time. His economic welfare got improved, but he still endeavoured in spreading the Islamic teachings.

The local people followed Tanduk Alam. They deliberately opened some new lands to plant it with durian or sago. With guide from Tanduk Alam on how to plant durian and sago, the local people could also empower their economic welfare. While teaching the local inhabitants to manage durian or sago plantation, Tanduk Alam also taught them the Islamic teachings. Consequently, a number of the Banggai people turned to Islam; hence now Islam is the most widely embraced religion in Central Sulawesi, especially in Sea-Sea and Tano Bonunungan.

And here is the story about Tanduk Alam and his effort in disseminating the Islamic teachings in Banggai, Central Sulawesi. To commemorate his merit, the local people buried his deceased body precisely in the back of the royal palace of Banggai Kingdom.

The above story is categorized a legend with some moral messages that can be derived. One the messages delivered through the story is that kindness will be rewarded with the unpredictably greater kindness. This is seen from the figure of Tanduk Alam. As he was a figure who kept conducting good deeds to all people, he got no problem in releasing the Princess of Banggai Kingdom. As well, he served the entire his life for disseminating Islam; thus his life got ease too. This is almost the same as what the Tunjuk Ajar Melayu (Effendy: 2006) says through a pantun below:

Wahai ananda dengarlah manat
Tulus dan ikhlas jadikan azimat
Berkorban menolong sesama umat
Semoga hidupmu beroleh rahmat
Wahai ananda dengarlah pesan
Tulus dan ikhlas jadikan pakaian
Rela dan taba dalam berkorban
Supaa hidupmu diberkahi Tuhan.

THE GOLDEN SNAIL

Prince Raden Putra was married to a princess named Dewi Limaran. One day when Dewi Limaran was walking in the palace garden, she saw a snail among her lovely flowers. She had one of her servants pick it up and throw it away. The Snail was actually an old witch who had disguised herself as a snail. The witch was very angry, so she cursed Dewi Limaran and changed her into a golden snail and threw it into the river. Then the stream carried it far away from the palace.

On the side of a big forest, there lived a poor widow. He living was only fishing. One day it was particularly bad day as she didn’t catch any fish. Again and again she spread her net, but nothing got caught into it. At last she pulled up the net to go home. There she saw something shining at the bottom of it. It was a golden snail. She picked it up and took it home.

At home she put in an earthen port. She then went to bed and soon was fast asleep as she was very tired. The next morning when she woke up, she found to her amazement that the floor had been swept clean. There was some food on the table. She wondered who had done all this. She thought she was dreaming, but she was not. She thought and thought but could not think of anybody who could have been so generous to her.

Some days passed, she then got an idea. The next morning she took her basket and went out as usual, but shortly she returned to her hut and hid herself. Suddenly she heard a soft movement inside the earthen pot and saw the snail creeping a lovely young girl stood where the snail had been. The empty shell fell to the ground behind her. Quickly the young girls swept the floor. The she took rice, vegetables, meat, eggs etc. out of the pot and began cooking.

The old woman saw all saw all this, she noticed that the girl lived under a spell. She then, tried to break it. She took the empty shell and throw it into the river. The girl came to live.

Many years passed by.

The king persuaded his son to look for another bride, but at first Prince Raden Putra refused as he could not forsake his wife. In the end, the prince asked his father if he could go out to find a bride himself.

They went from town to town and from village to village until one day they were traveling through a big forest and they lost their way. They came to a big river and not far from it they saw a hut. They went to it to ask for some food and drink as they were hungry. Raden Putra found the meal that served by the old woman excellent. She told him that her daughter had prepared it. Raden Putra then asked whether he might meet and thank her daughter. The old woman had no objections and called her daughter to come out. The young girls appeared and knelt down in front of Raden Putra with her head bent.

When Raden Putra saw her, he caught this breath in great surprise as he found his former wife princess, Dewi Limaran. Dewi Limaran then revealed her secret that she was lived under the evil witch’s spell.

Finally, Prince Raden Putra and Dewi Limaran lived happily ever after.

THE EAGLE-QUEEN

A Long time ago, a rich King lived on Nias Island. He was very fond of feasts and he often held big feasts. Many pigs and buffaloes were caught for the feasts, and a lot of money was spent. The King invited many people from all over the country, even from other countries too.

One day the Queen said to the King.

“We have these big feasts much too often, my husband. It takes so much money. I don’t think we should have them so often.” But the King didn’t listen to her. He held bigger and bigger feasts. At last the Queen grew tired of the King’s feasts.’

In Nias, a big feast lasts for many days, and it doesn’t end before the host’s brothers-in-law come. They usually come a few days before the high point of the feast.

One day, the King decided to hold another big feast. It was near the high point of the feast, and his brother-in-law had to be invited. It was a Nias’ custom that either the King or the Queen had to go to the Queen’s brother to invite them personally. This time the Queen asked the King.

“Please let me go to my brother’s house. I’m bored at home and I want to go out and leave the palace once in a while.” But the King also wanted to go, so he said.

“Dear wife, I want to go too. This is the right time for me to talk with them to make sure that the high point of the feast will be a success. We can’t leave the Kingdom together, you know that. One of us should stay to check on the feast preparations. Please understand. It’s important for the success of our feast. Our people will not respect us if the feast in not perfect.” So the King went to see his brother-in-law.

Feeling sad, the Queen went for a walk around the palace, and then she sat for a while in the garden. She did not watch the feast preparations. She was thinking. As she was sitting and thinking, she saw an eagle flying freely, high up in the sky.

“Oh, eagle,” she said, “If had wings like you, I’d fly wherever I wanted to. Oh, how happy I’d be.”

The eagle heard the Queen’s words. She sounded do that it flew down to her.

“Oh, my Queen,” said eagle, “You sound so sad. Let me help you.” The Queen was very surprised. “Can you help me?” she asked.

“I shall do my best, my dear Queen,” answered the eagle.

“What a wonderful eagle. But just how can you help me?”

“Well, we can exchange bodies. I’ll give you my wings so you can fly, and you give me your clothes and jewelry,” said the eagle.

“But I don’t want to be an eagle forever and ever,” said the Queen. “I just want to leave the palace for a few days. After that, I want to come back and help mu husband because I love him very much.”

“If you really love him, then why do you want to fly away?” asked the eagle.

“Oh, clever eagle,” the queen smiled, “I’m bored with the feasts. We’ve had too many feasts, and I don’t like them. I just want to get away for a while and then come back again to my duties as the King’s wife.”

“I see,” said the eagle. Then the eagle gave its wings to the Queen, and the Queen gave her body, clothes and jewelry to the eagle. The eagle wore the Queen’s clothes and jewelry, and looked very much like the real Queen. It then became the unreal Queen. At the same time, the Queen wore the eagle’s wings and she looked like an eagle. She became the eagle-Queen.

The eagle-Queen flew up in the clear sky and flew down to earth again. After some time, her flying became much better, and she flew to her brother’s house. Her husband and her brother were having lunch. Suddenly one of them saw the eagle.

“Look, what a strange bird. Why does it sit on the tuasa?” Suddenly the eagle came to the dining table, took a piece of meat and ate it on the tuasa. Everybody was shocked at the bird when in suddenly spoke to the King.

“My dear King, please return home. Go back to your palace immediately. Your people need you right now.”

The King stopped eating his lunch and hurried back to his palace. When he reached the front yard of the palace, he saw the unreal Queen. She was walking in the garden, and she looked normal, so he thought that there was nothing to worry about. Then he checked the preparation for the feasts. Everybody was busy and everything looked all right. Nothing seemed unusual at all. The King wondered.

“Why did the talking bird ask me to hurry home?” Then the King saw his wife. He called her but she didn’t answer.

“Maybe she’s still angry and disappointed in me,” the King thought.

Meanwhile, the eagle-Queen was sitting on top a coconut tree in the palace garden. It said to the unreal Queen.

Please serve the King. He’s very tired. Give him a glass of water and help him with the feast preparations.”

The King looked up and he saw the same eagle.

“What is really happening here? My wife is over there, but this eagle here sounds very much like mi wife.” The King was confused and didn’t know what to do.

“Who are you, strange bird? How can you talk like a human being?” he asked the eagle-Queen.

“Oh, I’m just an eagle, my King,” answered the eagle-Queen.

“But why is your voice very much like my wife’s?” The bird didn’t answer.

Meanwhile the unreal Queen was busy watching some chickend in the palace yard. Sometimes she ran after the chickens. She looked like she was trying to catch one of them. Some of the palace servants were watching the unreal Queen.

“Look! The Queen is acting very strangely. She’s not herself, is she?” after some time the unreal Queen became very hungry. She could no longer help herself. She quickly caught one chicken. The palace servants came to the unreal Queen, and what did they see? The Queen was sitting on a rock, holding the dead chicken. Her hands and mouth were full of blood. The servants cried out in horror and ran away. The King heard the noise in the yard. When the King saw the unreal Queen, he knew something terrible was happening to his wife. Then he got angry and shouted to the unreal Queen.

“Go away, you’re not my wife. I don’t know who you are, but you’re not my wife. Go away, or I’ll kill you.”

The eagle quickly came down from the coconut tree and asked the King in a high voice.

“Please, ky King, don’t kill her. Don’t her, please. Please, listen to me. Stop! Don’t do it!” But the King didn’t want to listen. The eagle tried to persuade the King once again.

“Please, Your Highness, if you kill her, I’ll always be a bird, I’ll never be a human being again.” But her voice was not loud enouch. The King was getting really angry. All he wanted to do was to kill unreal Queen.

For the last time the eagle-Queen asked the King.

“Please don’t kill her! She has my body. I’m your wife, but she has my body. Please...”.

“No, I don’t believe you eagle!” The King was really angry and could not think clearly about the bird’s words. He ran after the unreal Queen and killed her with his knife. Then he cut her to pieces. The eagle-Queen cried out loudly. Then she said.

“Your Highness, from now on your wife will always be an eagle. I’ll be an eagle forever, because I have lost my body. You have cut my body to pieces.” After saying that, she cried very sadly.

Suddenly the King realized his mistake. It was a terrible mistake. His face turned pale.

“Oh, no. why id I do that? Please, forgive me, my dear wife.” The King felt so terrible that he didn’t know what to do.

After a while the eagle-Queen said to the King.

“Being an eagle, I can’t live here as your Queen. Our people will hate me, so I must fly away now. I hope you’ll get a new wife soon.”

“No,” said the King, “You must stay here with me. I love you very much. I don’t want to lose you. Stay here and I’ll be happy. We must be together until we die.”

The eagle-Queen looked at her husband. She did not want to leave him and make him suffer. The eagle-Queen then came down from the coconut tree and lived with the King. The King took very good care of her. He even cooked for her, and both of them were happy.

Meanwhile the high point of the feast was going near. The King felt guilty looking at his wife. He had made her become an eagle, and yet still had his big feast.

“Dear wife, I promise you, I’ll stop having big feasts. This feast will be the last one, and then we’ll live together peacefully.” Tears rolled down from the eagle-Queen’s eyes, but they were happy tears. She was very touched by her husband’s words and happy to see the good changes in him. He could now see his own mistakes and was willing to change his bad habits.

Two days before the feast reached its highest point, the Queen’s brothers arrived. The King and all his men welcomed them. A group of women welcomed the female guests. Suddenly the Queen’s brother asked the King.

“Where’s your wife? We haven’t seen her in front of the palace. She must welcome the female guests as our custom teaches us. Now where is she? Is she sick?” The King did not say a word. He looked very sad. Then he asked the Queen’s brothers to enter the palace. When everybody was seated inside the palace, the king told them the truth. One of them said.

“How do we explain this to our honored guests? They will surely ask to see your wife. Remember, at the highest point of the feast, you and your wife will be given honorable titles by the guests.” It was a custom of Nias people that at the highest point of the feast, the King was given a title such as “Rajo Solakhomi” (the authoritative King) and the Queen was given a title such as “Futi Belaki” (the jewelry Queen).

Then the eldest of the Queen’s brothers said.

“The only thing you can do now is to take a new wife to be your Queen.” This made the King very sad. Meanwhile, the eagle-Queen heard all these conversations. She was deeply hurt, but she realized that she was a burden to the King. When the King was alone, she came to him and said,

“If stay here, I am a burden to you. I must leave the palace so that you can get a new wife. Then there won’t be any trouble during the feast. I beg you, please let e go!”

But the King loved his wife so much that he didn’t want her to go. At last, the eagle-Queen flew up in the sky far away from the palace. The King watched the bird fly away and then he ran out of the palace. He followed the eagle wherever it flew. He ran through the forests and across the rivers. He tried his best to follow his wife. The eagle-Queen saw what the King was doing and she was touched by his love. At last she came down and sat on a rock next to the King. The King was resting as he was quite tired from running. When the King grew thirsty, she took a coconut and gave it to him. He drank the juice and slept under a tree. The King and his eagle-Queen was in deep sorrow. She dug a hole and buried the King. The earth on top of the grave turned a strange yellow. The eagle-Queen planted a coconut tree at the head of the grave. The tree grew tall and became her resting place when she was tired.

Every day she flew far away, but she always came back before it was dark and she could still see the yellow earth on top of her husband’s grave.

Nowadays, whenever Nias people see an eagle flying near coconut tress and crying aloud, they say that the eagle-Queen is crying for her beloved husband.
